MARCH 31st:

This concert brings together some of my favorite Olympic Peninsula artists and the music of diverse traditions celebrating Freedom over the course of history. Songs from my family's tradition - the Workmen's Circle 3rd night Freedom Seder - for Passover are among the songs that first inspired me to sing - and sing for justice. I hope you'll be able to join us -- or send friends!
In love and song,
Judith-Kate

Big Thanks to all at Ft. Worden's Madrona Mindbody Institute for hosting
"Singing the Body, Voicing the Soul." Here's what Leticia Huber had to say about her experience in the workshop: "As a true lover of life… as a midwife of hopeful dreams, Judith-Kate receives us into her 'non-technical-technique'… One technique so profound, that blends with our core, and moves us deep into sound… Sound re-connection with Who we are at our Highest expression." ~~
This is a year to breathe deeply, follow callings, study, sing and praise
the amazing changes, exchanges, challenges and joys that are possible
when we call upon, and answer, each other in service to our deepest dreams.
A time to create together in the most affirming ways we can.
To risk the bold genuineness of our brilliance and our basic needs.
T o pause but not hesitate long when the impulse to contribute arises.
We all need each other. We all have so much to give.
I look forward to seeing and hearing from you, and to raising a ruckus as we sing
for the greatest good.
Thanks for joining me ~ and as ever, for your support!
In love and song, Judith-Kate

EARLY JANUARY....
New year......
Hearts broken open as an island quakes,
Lives gone, saved, levelled, forever changed
Friends battle cancer, triumphant courage
Here at a distance...the practice, each day:
Lift voices, hands, humbly, find a way
Come together, sing,
listen deep and true
Act in concert, we are the ones
One
and the same
Grief floods, earth upwells
Yet love renews....

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2009
Spring is just beginning to peek out in the NorthWest beauty of Port Townsend and the Olympic Peninsula. It feels great to have had a mostly deep and hibernating winter and to begin stepping into a more active and social time.
The first event of this new season is:
WELCOME HOME -- A Gratitude Concert - Saturday Feb 28th - at Dundee Hill Center in PT. Daniel Deardorff and I will be celebrating and sharing stories, slides, video clips and new songs from our adventure to the UK with poet Robert Bly, storyteller Gioia Timpanelli, mythologist Martin Shaw, and a caravan of poets and singers. Join us around the local hearth as we give thanks to our community - near and far - who made the journey possible.

---
It's a threshold time...
A time to listen and be patient
as well as act....
Years ago a wise teacher gave me
the image of resting in a boat
being carried on strong, benevolent
currents... an image to balance
momentum and stillness.
Sometimes
I'm resting in the boat.
More often I'm enjoying
dipping my canoe paddle
deep in the waters
of that guide-and-be-guided
exchange with the elements.
Moving slowly
so heart and eyes and body
can hear, delight, question,
even grieve, about the immensity,
the tenderness and contradictions
in all that surround us --
what is given,
what we make,
what blooms
and fades,
how we do or don't care,
how crucial to be present,
and how challenging.
Small sincere actions
effect ripples
far beyond
what we can know....
I wish you a Spring full of good health and courage whereever the waters
take you.

CELEBRATING THE EMBODIED VOICE
this
Saturday JANUARY 24th
from 2-5 at Port Townsend's
beautiful Madrona Mindbody Institute (MMI)
at Fort Worden State Park -
the Northwest's new home for conscious dance.
This will be a feast for body and soul -
All ages and voices and levels of experience are WELCOME!
Singing is our birthright -- The more we sing the healthier we become. MMI is a hub for community like none other; its where I fuel my soul each week; and its a great blessing to get to teach here for the first time.
So if you -- or friends - are a near our magical part of the world.... Spread the word and come on over!
We'll dissolve fear, embrace life, find our truest songs from the body on out, tune in to the greater dance - and connect with each other in new, and time-honored ways - voice to voice. Wear comfortable clothers, bring a journal and colors or collage materials for the closing reflection where we'll make touchstone to bring our intentions into the New Year.

DECEMBER 2008
It's been an amazing few months since we returned from the UK where Danny and I performed at the West Country Storytelling Festival and in London with a grand posse of US poets, storytellers and singers.
Thanks again for your support which made it possible for us. We look forward to sharing songs and slides from our adventure sometime in early 2009.
Some Great NEWS:
Songwriting Works has received a 2009 NEA Creativity and Aging in America grant to launch our programs in Washington State. In conjunction with Arts Northwest and the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, Judith-Kate and a team of professional songwriters will bring the healing power of making original music to several hundred elders, families, health and music professionals and communities in the region.
Dr. Theresa Allison's study of Songwriting Works at the Jewish Home San Francisco, "Songwriting in the Nursing Home: Transcending Institutionalization Through Music," has just been published in the Oxford Handbook of Medical Ethnomusicology (Oxford University Press, 2008).
SW is also one of fourteen projects nationwide being considered for a three year Healing through the Arts grant from Johnson and Johnson/The Society for the Arts in Healthcare.
This is an interesting time for fundraising – amidst so much economic change and uncertainty.
What is certain is that music aids and transforms people and situations; In the toughest times music is often a lifeline, catalyzing healing for those facing acute physical, mental, or cognitive pain or limitations - and opening communication between elders living with dementia, or depression, their loved ones, and the wider world.
If you are able make a year-end tax-deductible gift or can help spread the word to those who can...
Your support in any amount will strengthen our ability to match federal and corporate funding - help us hire and train songwriters to lead more workshops – and grow our programs when and where they're most needed. THANK YOU!

- The afternoon will focus on the break with the familiar and ordinary life, and is entitled OUT OF THE VILLAGE.
- The evening will focus on the extra-ordinary experience of wilderness and is entitled INTO THE FOREST.
These two workshops are each intended to offer a complete experience yet also differ enough to provide a continuum. We encourage you to attend both sessions if possible.

JEWISH HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES
Judith-Kate Friedman, Cantorial Soloist, San Francisco
While it may not be customary to include community services on a calendar of cultural events serving as a cantorial soloist is one of the great joys in my musical life. A large residential care campus becomes even more of a small village during this holy time of year. If you are interested in attending as a guest, it may be possible. Please contact me at 510/710-4878
